Recently, CMS has implemented what we all came to know as the ‘Sunshine Act’, or Open Payments Program. Although this has been part of the healthcare reform bill since 2010, it was not released until February 2013. According to this Act, any payments and gifts made to physicians or teaching hospitals by medical device or pharmaceutical manufacturers must be publicly released in a searchable federal database, beginning September 2014. All payment data is now available for physicians and teaching hospitals to review and dispute before the August 27th, 2014 deadline.
